If you're looking to round out your Hawaii golf vacation with a different kind of course, the Volcano Golf course is it. Situated on the rim of the active Kilauea volcanic crater, Volcano Golf Course lies in the cool highlands 4,000 feet above the sea, with sweeping vistas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (both snowcapped in winter). Fairways are lined by forest and undergrowth, adding to the challenge of this golf course. Golf at Volcano Golf & Country Club is definitely different than at any Hawaii resort golf course.
Hawaii's golf concierge says:
"This course is at a high altitude and the ball will travel further than you're used to. Club down and you'll be happier with your game. If you hit the ball off the fairway, take the stroke; the ball is hard to find in the forest and undergrowth. And the slick greens require a good pitch-and-run game."
Tips for this course:
- Drink lots of water on this course. Being in Hawaii, you will forget that you are at a high altitude. Water will help deter altitude sickness.
- Bring a jacket. The mountains get cold even when the sun is shining bright. It's worse when the wind is blowing or when the sun goes down.
